Wabaunsee County
Wabaunsee County originally was organized as Richardson County and was created in 1855. It was named after Colonel “Dick” Richardson of Illinois, who was the leader in the House of Representatives on the Democratic side in the debate on the Kansas-Nebraska Bill. In February 1859, the county’s name was changed to Wabaunsee, that being the name of a chief of the Pottawatomie Indians. |

The community of Alma, which is the county seat, reflects the heritage of the region, with its old stone buildings along main street glowing in the scenic Kansas sunsets. Alma also is the starting point of the scenic Skyline/Mill Creek drive that winds its way from Alma to Alta Vista. And Lake Wabaunsee, which is located near the town of Eskridge, is one of the prettiest lakes in Kansas.
