Riley County

Riley County was organized in 1855, and received its name from the adjacent military post which was established in 1853, and called Fort Riley in honor of General Riley of the United States army. The city of Manhattan, which is known as the Little Apple, is the county seat, the county’s largest community, and the location of Kansas State University.

  Riley County

Located in the rolling hills of Kansas and edging the Kansas River, Manhattan is home to exhilarating Big XII sports, excellent restaurants, extraordinary outdoor recreation, exciting history and exceptional shopping.  With an inspiring view of the prairie, the natural landscape introduces the visitor to the magnificence of the Flint Hills.  Manhattan is situated just off Interstate 70, 125 miles west of Kansas City.

In 2005, Manhattan and Riley County turned 150 years old.  While the celebrations scheduled for this event are over, you can still learn about Manhattan's Sesquicentennial by visiting www.celebrate150.org.
