Pottawatomie County

Pottawatomie County was organized in 1857 and was named for the Pottawatomie Indians, whose reservation at the opening of the Kansas Territory for settlement, and for years afterward, embraced a large portion of the geographical area of the County.

The county seat is the community of Westmoreland – which boasts the second largest hand-dug well in Kansas – and the community with the largest population is Wamego. With its eye on the future and its values molded by the past, Wamego offers the unique blend of progressive spirit and hometown tradition. A growing community of more than 4,000, Wamego is steeped in history and filled with recreational opportunities. Kansas' only authentic stone Dutch Mill towers over the beautiful City Park, the perfect place for picnicing and horseshoes, feeding the ducks and fishing in the pond, or strolling through the beautiful Flower Garden.

Adjoining the park, the museum and historical complex forge the link with Wamego's colorful past. To the northeast of town, the Louis Vieux Elm, proclaimed in 1978 as the largest American Elm in the United States, is sentinal to the Vermillion River where Louis Vieux, a Pottawatomie Indian, once operated the first ferry along the Oregon Trail. Wamego is also the birthplace of Walter P. Chrysler and the home where he was born still stands on the south edge of town.
