Dickinson County

Dickinson County was organized in 1857 and named in honor of Daniel S. Dickinson, who was a Senator from the State of New York.  Dickinson introduced resolutions respecting territorial government and embodying the doctrine of popular sovereignty, which were incorporated in the Bill for the organization of Kansas Territory. Currently, Dickinson County is perhaps best known for its many museums and attractions, include the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library.

The Dickinson County seat is Abilene, whose reputation as the “wickedest & wildest town in the west” developed when hundreds of cowboys arrived in town along the historic Chisholm Trail during the late 1800s. Today, while Abilene’s history has been well preserved in its quality museums and beautifully restored historic homes, life in Abilene has become much more civilized.

Abilene has a diverse economic base, which is supported both by manufacturing and a growing service industry. Thousands of visitors from around the world travel to Abilene each year to tour its historic attractions and shop in its unique antique and gift shops.
