Clay County

Clay County was organized in 1866 and was named in honor of the distinguished Kentucky statesman, Henry Clay, who was chosen United States Senator in 1806. Today, Clay County prides itself on its natural beauty and its friendly communities.

Clay Center, the county seat, is one of the best kept secrets in the heartland, with beautiful and safe tree-lined streets, antique and unique gift shops galore, and eateries offering down-home, up-scale or fast food cooking. While offering many of the same amenities as larger communities, such as an Arts Council which brings performing arts to town, a historical museum, a zoo, organized recreation, a theatre, a youth center and quality retirement housing, Clay Center also provides an atmosphere not often found in larger places. The pride of the community is reflected in the care given to keep the town clean, safe and enjoyable for people of all ages.
