The history and the heritage of this region was born thousands of years ago as glaciers receded, inland seas dried up and the Kansas tallgrass prairies became established.
The name Kansas came from the Kansa people who settled in the Flint Hills area during the 1500s. And the history of Fort Riley – a post named in honor of Bennet C. Riley – stretches back over 150 years to the time when the Oregon and Santa Fe trails began to carry immigrants and commerce across the continental United States. |
